It depends on the brand. Some require a separate hub (like Philips Hue)


others work without a hub (TP Link for example). You can go with individual bulbs, switches, or plugs (for a lamp for example). Obviously the switches require a little bit of wiring as you replace your existing switch. If your smart bulb/switch/plug doesn't require a hub, then it's just a matter of finding the skill in the Alexa app and enabling it. You may have to create an account with the smart product manufacturer first. You name the smart product and then you can control it by using the proper commands. For mine, I just say "Alexa turn on the kitchen light."
